Spamoo's Philosophy
A common misconception is Spam Filter must be individually trained to be effective.
We must not forget that you alone are not the target of a spam. Spammers are known to send out millions of identical emails, they do not really care about your name, your age, your location etc, they are just banking on a small percentage of response out of the millions.
As a result, Spamoo is designed on the same concept as a spam - We only need contribution/reports from a small percentage of members for everybody to benefit from Spamoo's centralised filters. Spamoo also relies heavily on the economy of scale to succeed - One member per moderator is expensive, but 20,000 members per moderator is highly cost-effective!
Another reason for centralised moderated filters is due to the amazing adaptive and innovative approaches by spammers around the world. Spammers are working non-stop trying to get around spam filters, and they seem to share their 'findings', so once a certain writing style has been tested okay, almost all spams will contain that style.
Therefore it is a waste of time training spam filters and fighting spams alone.
However, a community-based filter will soon attract spammers' attention. Thus in order to prevent spying, we introduced moderation so that our filters will not be spoilt by deliberate false reports from spy-spammers in Spamoo. Many filters in the markets are suffering from false positive because spammers are feeding these filters with legitimate words to confuse filters.
One interesting fact about Spamoo is, we encourage spams to slip through. We believe, sooner or later, spammers will start using Spamoo to filter their spam emails until these spams are cleared. It does not matter. By doing so, we create a false sense of success to spammers, who would then start sending out millions of such spam emails.
Fortunately, after a couple of these spam emails slipped through, our moderators will be alerted and add certain key phrases from these spams into the centralised filter, and this will effectively eliminate the rest of this particular spam effort.
Many filters make spams go away, we make them stay away.
